 INTRODUCTION 

 1.1 INTRODUCTION

 Synchronous generators are mainly used for electric power generation. The problem of electric power in the country is largely due to inadequate power generation. This problem is characterized mainly by load shedding. To provide adequate electricity for the teeming populace of this country, various attempts have been made to enhance the output unit of synchronous generators. More importantly, increase in output power of synchronous generators has not kept pace with the increase in the power output of prime movers driving them. To this end, a hybrid synchronous machine capable of delivering ultra high output power is developed. 

 1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 

 The specific objective of this work is to develop a hybrid field excited synchronous machine capable of delivering ultra high power output. This machine will find application in bulk power supply. In this project, the hybrid synchronous reluctance machine being described [1]- [5] will operate in the pure synchronous mode by introducing a direct current field winding spanning both sections of the machine and mounted on the combined rotor. The arrangement will take advantage of the achievable ultra high D Q X / X ratio to deliver ultra high output power and enables the round rotor half to contribute to the net output power. The hybrid synchronous machine of this study comprises a round rotor and salient pole rotor is essentially a salient pole machine and the derivation of the output power
